# Why your business has vanished from Google Maps, and how to get it back

One morning the phone is quiet. You search for yourself and you are not there. No pin, no reviews, no opening hours, as though the business closed. For anything urgent, where the map results sit above everything else, this is close to being shut for the day.

It is almost always one of a small number of causes, and in many cases it is recoverable. What it needs is the right fix rather than a flurry of edits, because repeated edits during a review can make things worse.

## The usual causes

**Suspension after an edit.** The commonest trigger. A change to the business name, address, category or phone number puts the profile back through verification, and something in the change trips a rule. Adding keywords to the business name is a frequent one, as is a name on the profile that does not match the name on the signage and the website.

**An address that cannot be verified.** Service area businesses working from home sit awkwardly here. A virtual office, a shared desk or a unit that shows no sign of your business at the postcode is a common reason for a profile to be pulled.

**Duplicates.** Two profiles for one business, often one created years ago by a previous owner or a marketing agency, can lead to one being removed and the wrong one surviving.

**A competitor edit or a bad report.** Anyone can suggest a change to a listing. Sometimes those suggestions are wrong and occasionally they are not made in good faith.

**You are still there, just outranked.** Worth ruling out first. The map shows three businesses and the rest are behind a click, so slipping from third to fourth looks like vanishing. A different device or a different part of town will tell you quickly.

## Getting it back

Start by finding out which situation you are in. Sign in and look for a suspension notice, and check whether the profile is gone entirely or merely lower down.

If it is suspended, gather evidence before you appeal: photos of signage, a utility bill or lease at the address, business registration documents, and anything that ties the name you use to the address you claim. Then submit one reinstatement request with that evidence attached. Do not submit several, and do not keep editing the profile while it is under review. Both slow it down.

If the cause was a name stuffed with keywords or an address you cannot evidence, fix the underlying thing first. Appealing without changing what triggered it usually ends the same way.

Reinstatement can take days or weeks. In the meantime, the searches that used to reach you through the map can still reach you through your website, which is one of several reasons not to let the profile be your only presence. Our guide on [why your business might not be showing up](https://www.frively.com/blog/why-isnt-my-business-showing-up-on-google) covers the website side.

## Stopping it happening again

Use the business name exactly as it appears on your signage, your invoices and your website, with no added services or towns. Keep the name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear online. Make changes one at a time rather than in a batch. Keep the evidence of your address somewhere you can find it. And check the profile every month, because a suggested edit can change your hours or your category without telling you. That habit is part of [optimising your Google Business Profile](https://www.frively.com/blog/how-to-optimise-google-business-profile-local-business) rather than a separate job.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does reinstatement take?

Anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the reason and the evidence supplied. A single well-evidenced appeal is faster than repeated ones.

### Will I lose my reviews?

Reviews are usually restored with the profile when it is reinstated. They can be lost if a duplicate profile is removed instead, which is one reason to sort duplicates carefully rather than quickly.

### Can I just create a new profile?

It is a bad idea. A second profile for a suspended business tends to be removed too, and you lose the review history. Appeal the original.

### Why did it happen when I changed nothing?

Edits can be suggested by other people, and periodic re-verification can catch an address or category that has quietly been wrong for a while.
