# How long does it take to show up on Google?

The honest answer is months rather than weeks, and the honest follow-up is that it depends heavily on where you are starting from. That is unsatisfying, so here is the detail behind it, including what should be visibly moving at each stage. If nothing is moving by the milestones below, something is wrong and worth asking about.

## Why it is not instant

Search engines have to do three things before you can rank. Find the page. Understand what it is about and decide whether it is trustworthy. Then test it against the pages already ranking, by showing it to some people and watching what they do.

That last step is the slow one, and it cannot be hurried. A page that has existed for a fortnight has given nobody enough evidence to promote it over one that has been answering the same question for three years. This is also why the businesses above you are not necessarily better, they are frequently just earlier.

## A realistic timeline

**Weeks one to four.** Profile work shows fastest. A corrected category, complete opening hours and the first new reviews can change your map position inside a month. New website pages will be found and indexed in this window but will sit low.

**Months two and three.** Pages begin appearing for longer, more specific searches, the ones with several words and a place in them. Volume is small and quality is high, because someone searching a precise phrase knows what they want. First enquiries from search often arrive here, and they surprise owners by being good ones.

**Months four to six.** Movement on the main terms. Pages that were on page three settle onto page one for their specific search, and the total number of searches you appear for climbs steadily. This is usually the point where the phone pattern changes noticeably.

**Months six to twelve.** Compounding. Pages published early are now trusted, which makes new pages rank faster than the first ones did. Competitive head terms come into reach.

**Beyond twelve months.** Maintenance and extension rather than a fresh start, provided the work continued. This is the part that makes the early patience worth it.

## What makes it faster or slower

Faster: an established site with existing trust, a less competitive area, a specific service rather than a broad one, a complete profile with real reviews, and consistent monthly work rather than a burst followed by silence.

Slower: a brand new domain, a competitive city, going after broad terms first, a slow site, or stopping after three months because nothing appeared to happen. That last one is the commonest reason SEO is judged not to work, and it is the equivalent of digging up a seed to see how it is doing.

## What you should be watching

Not your position on your one favourite phrase, checked from your own office, which tells you almost nothing. Watch the total number of searches you appear for, the number of pages getting any traffic at all, and enquiries. The first two move well before the third, which is what makes them useful early. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can I pay to speed it up?

Not the organic side. Paid ads buy visibility immediately and stop the moment you stop paying, which is a reasonable bridge while the organic work builds. The difference is set out in [organic visibility compared with paid ads](https://www.frively.com/organic-visibility-vs-paid-ads).

### Why does my competitor rank and they have a terrible website?

Usually time. They have been there longer, so search engines have more evidence about them. That advantage erodes once you are consistently better.

### Is it faster for a new business or an established one?

Established, generally, because the domain and the business have a history to draw on. A new business is not starting from a worse place, only an emptier one.

### What if I stop after six months?

What you have built tends to hold for a while and then slowly slips as competitors keep going. It is closer to letting a garden go than switching off a light.
