# Local SEO for solicitors: winning local instructions

Someone has had an offer accepted on a house. Someone else has been handed a settlement agreement they do not understand. A third person has finally decided to write a will after a friend died without one.

None of them will browse. Each has one need, they will search it with their town attached, read two or three firms carefully, and instruct. The reading is quick and the judgement is harsh, because they are choosing someone to handle something that frightens them slightly.

## Practice areas are separate searches

A firm does conveyancing, wills and probate, family, employment and commercial work. To a search engine, and to a client, those are five different things searched five different ways by five different people.

A single Services page listing all five ranks for none of them well. A page for each, written for the person in that situation, ranks and converts. The conveyancing page should read like it was written for a nervous first-time buyer. The employment page should read like it was written for someone who was handed an agreement yesterday and has ten days to respond. Same firm, different reader. This is the [one page per service](https://www.frively.com/blog/one-page-per-service-local-seo) rule, and legal work is where it shows most clearly.

## Clarity is the differentiator

Legal websites are unusually full of language that reassures the firm and does nothing for the client. The firms that win local instructions online are generally the ones that say what happens, in what order, how long it usually takes, what it is likely to cost, and what the client needs to do next.

That is not dumbing down. It is answering the questions on the other side of the screen. A page that explains the conveyancing process week by week will out-earn one that describes the firm's commitment to excellence, every time.

## Named people, not a masthead

Clients instruct a person. Individual profiles for fee earners, with their qualifications, the work they handle and how long they have done it, matter more here than in almost any other sector. A firm listing six partners as names on a wall and a shared enquiry address gives a nervous client nothing to attach to.

## Catchment and the office question

Clients will travel further for a specialist than for general work, and much of the process now happens remotely. So a firm can serve a wide area while ranking in one town.

Pages for the surrounding towns fix this, provided each says something true about that place rather than the same paragraph with the name changed. If you have no office in a town, say so plainly on the page and explain how the work is handled. Candour reads better than implication, and implication is the thing that gets a firm a complaint. See [local landing pages](https://www.frively.com/blog/local-landing-pages) for how to build them properly.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which practice area should we start with?

Usually conveyancing or wills, because the searches are frequent, local and high intent. Start with whichever you want more of and currently rank for least.

### Should we publish fees?

For certain work, including conveyancing and some employment matters, price transparency obligations apply. Beyond that it is a commercial choice, and explaining what drives a fee helps even where a figure is not given.

### Do reviews matter for law firms?

Yes, and clients read them closely because the alternative signals are hard to judge. Ask after completion, when relief is highest.

### Is this different from marketing to commercial clients?

Yes. Commercial buyers search differently, read differently and value sector experience over proximity. Those pages should be written separately rather than adapted.
