# The on-page SEO checklist every local business should follow

On-page SEO is everything on a single web page that helps Google understand it and rank it. Get these few things right on every page and you give Google what it needs to put you in front of the person searching. Miss them, and even a good-looking site stays invisible. Here is the on-page SEO checklist we build into every page.

> **The big idea:** Google publishes what a good page needs. The hard part is not knowing the rules, it is applying every one of them on every page, not just the homepage.

## 1\. A clear, unique page title

The page title is the clickable blue line in Google's results. Keep it under about sixty characters so it does not get cut off, and give every page its own, written around the exact thing that page is about. Never leave two pages sharing a title, and never settle for "Home" or "Welcome".

## 2\. A meta description that earns the click

This is the short grey paragraph under the title. Keep it to around a hundred and sixty characters and write it as a reason to click. It does not change your ranking directly, but it decides whether people choose you over the results around you. There is a full guide in [what a meta description is and why it matters](https://www.frively.com/blog/what-is-a-meta-description).

## 3\. One clear heading structure

Every page needs one main heading that says what the page is, then subheadings in a sensible order underneath. Headings are the skeleton of the page, and they are how Google, AI tools and skim-readers work out what matters. Do not use headings just to make text bigger.

## 4\. Descriptive image alt text

Google cannot see your photos, so every image needs a short written description of what it shows. It adds context, gets you into image search and helps people using screen readers. More on this in [what alt text is and why every image needs it](https://www.frively.com/blog/what-is-alt-text).

## 5\. Structured data

This is code that labels the facts on your page so search engines never have to guess. It earns rich results like star ratings and answers, and it feeds AI search. See [what structured data is and why your website needs it](https://www.frively.com/blog/what-is-structured-data).

## 6\. Internal links

Every page should link to related pages and back to its category, so nothing sits stranded. Links help Google find your pages and pass strength around your site. Here is [why internal linking helps your SEO](https://www.frively.com/blog/what-is-internal-linking).

## 7\. Fast, mobile-first pages

A slow page loses both visitors and rankings, and a lot of local searches happen on a phone. Speed comes from how the page is built, not from a plugin added at the end. Structure, keywords and performance together are [what makes a local business website rank](https://www.frively.com/blog/what-makes-a-local-business-website-rank).

> **Rule of thumb:** if you would not be happy for a customer to judge you on your worst page, that page needs the same checklist as your best one.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO is everything you control on a page itself: the title, the description, the headings, the content, the images and the code behind them. It is different from off-page SEO, which is about signals from other websites, like links and reviews.

### Do I really need to do this on every page?

Yes. Google ranks pages, not websites. A page that skips the checklist competes with one hand tied behind its back, and it is often a quiet inner page, not the homepage, that would win you a new customer.

### How many of these matter most?

They work together, so it is hard to rank one above the rest. A clear title and heading structure are the foundation, but a fast page with no structured data, or great content with no internal links, still leaves results on the table.

### How do I know if my pages pass?

The quickest way is to have someone check. A review will show you, page by page, which items are in place and which are missing.

## Ready to see how your pages score?

Working through this on every page by hand is exactly where things slip. Our [free website assessment](https://www.frively.com/website-review) checks your site against this checklist and tells you plainly what is passing and what is not, reviewed by a real person rather than an automated tool.
