If you want a quick, high impact SEO win, start with page titles.

They are easy to change, they help Google understand what each page is about, and they influence what people click in search results.

Many accountancy websites still use titles like:

- Home
- Services
- About
- Contact

Those titles might make sense internally, but they do not match how people search.

Clients are not searching for “Services”. They are searching for:

- accountant in \[town\]
- tax return accountant
- bookkeeping services
- VAT returns help
- payroll services

Page titles help you meet that search intent.

**Page titles are not for you**
They are for Google and for the person deciding which result to click.
Clear titles lead to better rankings and better clicks.

## First, a quick clarification (this trips people up)

The **SEO page title** (sometimes called the **title tag**) is mainly for:

- search results
- browser tabs

It is not necessarily the big headline visitors see at the top of the page.

That top headline is your **H1**.

They often match, and that is usually a good thing, but they do not have to.

**Page title vs page heading**

- SEO page title: helps Google understand the page and influences clicks in search
- H1 heading: helps visitors understand the page once they land
Both matter, but they do different jobs.

## Why page titles matter for local accountants

Google ranks clarity. When your title clearly states what the page is about, Google can match it to relevant searches more confidently.

And your potential clients scan results quickly. A clear title feels like a direct match, which means more clicks from the right people.

So page titles do two jobs:

- help your page show up
- help the right person choose you

## Keep SEO page titles under 60 characters

As a rule of thumb, aim for SEO page titles that are **under 60 characters**.

Why?

Because Google often truncates longer titles in search results, especially on mobile. When a title gets cut off, the most important part can disappear, and the page looks less clear.

Short titles also tend to be:

- easier to scan
- clearer for Google to interpret
- more click friendly for busy searchers

**Put the important words first**
Start with the service and location.
Add your firm name at the end if you include it.
That way, even if a title is shortened, it still makes sense.

## The simple title formula that works for accountants

A reliable formula is:

**Service or topic + location + firm name**

But keep it compact. You do not need every detail.

For example:

- Tax Return Accountant in Leeds | Firm Name
- Bookkeeping Services in Bristol | Firm Name
- VAT Returns Help in Manchester | Firm Name

If that feels too long, drop the firm name or shorten the wording.

The key is clarity, not length.

## Homepage titles that rank and convert

Many firms miss this. Your homepage title should not just be your firm name.

A homepage title that works locally often includes:

- “Accountants in \[town\]”
- a client type, if relevant
- one or two core services if you can fit them cleanly

Short examples you can copy (kept under 60 characters where possible):

- Accountants in Leeds | Firm Name
- Accountants in Bristol | Firm Name
- Accountants for Sole Traders in Manchester
- Small Business Accountants in Nottingham

If you work UK wide, be clear:

- Online Accountants for Small Businesses
- UK Wide Tax Return Support

## Service page titles you can copy

These are the pages that often bring the most high intent enquiries. Your titles should match the service and local intent.

### Self assessment and tax returns

- Tax Return Accountant in Leeds
- Self Assessment Help in Bristol
- Tax Returns for Landlords in Manchester

### Bookkeeping

- Bookkeeping Services in Leeds
- Ecommerce Bookkeeping in Bristol
- Bookkeeping for Builders in Manchester

### VAT

- VAT Returns Help in Leeds
- VAT Registration in Bristol
- VAT for Ecommerce in Manchester

### Payroll

- Payroll Services in Leeds
- Payroll for Small Teams in Bristol
- Payroll for Care Homes in Manchester

### Limited company and year end accounts

- Limited Company Accounts in Leeds
- Year End Accounts in Bristol
- Company Accounts in Manchester

**One page, one main intent**
One service per page, one main topic per title.
That is how you build pages that rank and convert.

## Titles for “who we help” pages

These can be extremely useful if you want more of a particular type of client.

Examples:

- Accountants for Sole Traders in Leeds
- Accountants for Landlords in Bristol
- Small Business Accountants in Manchester

You do not need to cover every niche. Start with the client types you genuinely want more of.

## About and contact page titles (yes, these matter too)

Even these can be clearer than “About” or “Contact”.

Examples:

- About Our Accountants in Leeds
- Contact an Accountant in Bristol
- Book a Call with an Accountant

Contact pages often rank for branded searches and local intent. A clearer title helps and it looks more professional in results.

## Common mistakes to avoid

### Repeating the same title across pages

If multiple pages share the same title, Google struggles to tell them apart.

Make every title unique.

### Stuffing too many keywords

Titles like “Best Cheap Accountant Tax Returns VAT Payroll Bookkeeping \[Town\]” look spammy and reduce trust.

Keep it readable.

### Writing a strong title but leaving the page thin

If your title promises VAT help and the page has two short paragraphs, it will struggle to rank and visitors will not feel confident.

A strong title should match strong, useful content.

**Title gets the click, page gets the enquiry**
A clear title without useful content wastes the opportunity.
Pair title improvements with stronger service pages.

## A simple way to prioritise

If you only update five titles this week, start here:

1. Homepage
2. Tax returns page
3. Bookkeeping page
4. VAT page
5. Contact or booking page

These pages tend to have the highest impact because they match common searches and high intent visitors.

**Small changes compound**
One improved title might not feel dramatic.
Across many pages, it adds up to more visibility and better clicks.

Page titles are one of those rare jobs that is both quick and worth doing.

Make them clearer, keep them short, and match them to real searches. You will help Google understand your pages and help the right clients pick you before they even land on your site.
