![Frively graphic with Honeys and Timba salon homepages and stats: 6x Google visits, 86% cited by Google AI, speed score 94](/_next/image?url=%2Fapi%2Fmedia%2Ffile%2Ffrively-salon-websites-compared-hero.jpg%3Fprefix%3Dtenants%252F691b30e96e6ad8298234a312%26v%3D1793812591184&w=3840&q=75&dpl=dpl_72zQjLh3t2H9G7im5uD1ZNPbqqYT)

Most salon owners we speak to have the same quiet worry. The website looks lovely, it cost a fair bit, and yet new clients still come mainly from word of mouth and Instagram. So we decided to put some numbers on it.

We took 28 hair, beauty and grooming salons whose websites run on the Frively platform and compared them with 22 independent salon websites built elsewhere. Same country, same kind of business, same Google. Then we measured how often each one gets found, how often Google's AI quotes it, and how well each site is built under the bonnet.

The gap was bigger than we expected.

## The short version

- **6 times the visits.** The typical Frively salon gets an estimated 368 visits a month from Google, against 59 for the typical independent salon.
- **Nearly 4 times the page-one rankings.** A median of 27.5 searches on page one, against 7.5.
- **Quoted by Google's AI.** 86% of Frively salons are cited in Google's AI Overviews, against 36% of independents.
- **Faster and cleaner.** A median speed score of 94 out of 100, against 68.

## How we ran the comparison

Every figure below is a median, the middle salon in each group, so one unusually big or small site can't skew the picture. We left out one large multi-salon group from the independent side so the comparison stays like for like: single salons against single salons.

Google ranking and visit figures come from DataForSEO for Google UK. AI citation figures come from DataForSEO's tracking of Google AI Overviews in the UK. Technical scores come from Pulse, our own site audit tool, which crawls every page and runs Google's Lighthouse tests on each one.

## Found: who shows up when clients search

This is the part that pays the bills. A new client can only book you if they find you first, and these days most of them start with a search like "balayage near me" or "hairdresser in \[your town\]".

![Honeys Hair and Beauty homepage headline, Hairdressers and Beauty Salon in Taunton, over a photo of the salon team](/_next/image?url=%2Fapi%2Fmedia%2Ffile%2Ffrively-salon-websites-compared-honeys-homepage.jpg%3Fprefix%3Dtenants%252F691b30e96e6ad8298234a312%26v%3D1793812591359&w=3840&q=75&dpl=dpl_72zQjLh3t2H9G7im5uD1ZNPbqqYT)Honeys in Taunton say exactly what they do and where in their homepage headline, so Google and new clients know straight away.

The top three matters most. That's where the bulk of clicks go, and it's where the map pack and the first few organic results live. **Every one of the 28 Frively salons holds at least one top-three position**, and half of them hold ten or more. Six of the 22 independent salons don't rank in the top three for a single search.

Breadth matters too. 13 of the 28 Frively salons rank for 100 or more different searches. Only 4 of the 22 independents do, and 7 of them rank for fewer than 20.

## Found by AI: who Google's AI Overviews quote

When someone asks Google a question like "where can I get keratin smoothing near me" or "how much does balayage cost", an AI Overview often answers before any normal results appear. It lists the websites it drew on. Being one of those sources is quickly becoming the new top spot, and it's where a lot of salons are invisible.

The typical independent salon isn't quoted by Google's AI at all. The typical Frively salon is quoted several times, and our busiest salon sites are cited more than a hundred times each.

### Why AI picks some salons and not others

AI answers lean on pages that clearly explain one thing: a treatment, what it involves, how long it takes, what it costs and where you can get it. A single "Services" page listing thirty treatments gives the AI very little to quote. A dedicated page for each treatment gives it plenty.

![Simon Warwick Salons balayage page showing a price of £185 to £240, from 180 mins, a Book Online button and three colourists](/_next/image?url=%2Fapi%2Fmedia%2Ffile%2Ffrively-salon-websites-compared-simon-warwick-balayage-page.jpg%3Fprefix%3Dtenants%252F691b30e96e6ad8298234a312%26v%3D1793812592721&w=3840&q=75&dpl=dpl_72zQjLh3t2H9G7im5uD1ZNPbqqYT)One treatment, one page: Simon Warwick's balayage page gives the price, the time and the colourists who do it, exactly what AI answers like to quote.

## Trusted: what's going on under the bonnet

Google wants to send people to websites that load quickly on a phone, work for everyone and answer the question properly. Pulse checks exactly that on every page of a site.

Two numbers here explain most of what we saw above. Frively salon sites load about eight times faster, which matters because most salon clients are booking on their phone between other things. And they have four times as many pages, which means four times as many chances to match what someone is actually searching for.

## Booked: one salon, before and after

Park Row Hair and Beauty were in our independent group when we first audited their website in April 2026. They moved to a Frively website shortly afterwards. Same salon, same town, same team.

## Why the gap exists

None of this comes down to luck or a bigger budget. It comes down to how the site is built.

**One page, one job.** Every treatment gets its own page aimed at one search: balayage in your town, keratin smoothing, bridal hair, gel nails, brow lamination. Google and its AI can see exactly what you offer and where, so they're happy to send people your way. You can see how this works on our [websites for hair and beauty salons](/solution-hair-and-beauty/salons) page.

![Honeys Hair and Beauty menu listing hairdressing treatments in eight groups, each treatment linking to its own page](/_next/image?url=%2Fapi%2Fmedia%2Ffile%2Ffrively-salon-websites-compared-honeys-services-menu.jpg%3Fprefix%3Dtenants%252F691b30e96e6ad8298234a312%26v%3D1793812592875&w=3840&q=75&dpl=dpl_72zQjLh3t2H9G7im5uD1ZNPbqqYT)Every treatment in Honeys' menu has its own page, from grey blending to keratin smoothing. That's dozens of chances to be found.

**Best practice built in.** Google is open about what a good page looks like. Our platform won't publish a page that misses those standards, so titles, descriptions, headings and speed are right on every page, every time, without you needing to know any of it.

**Done for you, for good.** We build the site, host it, keep it fast and keep adding fresh content. You carry on doing hair and treatments, and the enquiries keep landing in your inbox.

### Check your own salon website

- Does every treatment you offer have its own page?
- Does your site load in under two seconds on your phone, on 4G?
- Does each page say clearly which town or area you're in?
- Do you appear on page one when you search for your best treatment and your town?
- When you ask Google about that treatment locally, is your salon quoted in the AI answer?

If you ticked fewer than three, your website is probably leaving bookings on the table.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a faster website really get more bookings?

Yes, in two ways. Google prefers fast sites, so you rank higher and get seen more. And a client on a phone who waits more than a few seconds for a page will often go back and tap the next salon instead.

### My salon is busy from word of mouth. Does this matter?

Word of mouth is brilliant, but it's capped by how many people your current clients talk to. Search brings in people who are actively looking for a treatment right now and don't know you yet. It's also how you fill the quieter days and the higher-value treatments you want more of.

### Are these figures exact?

The visit and ranking numbers are estimates from DataForSEO, not readings from each salon's own analytics. They're best used to compare the two groups, which is exactly how we've used them. The Pulse scores are measured directly from each website.

### Why is Google's AI quoting websites at all?

AI Overviews pull their answers from pages Google already trusts and links to them as sources. A salon that's cited gets seen right at the top of the results, often before the normal listings.
