# What is a meta description (and why it matters)?

A meta description is the short paragraph of text that appears under your page title in Google's search results. It is your advert for the click: the couple of lines that tell someone what they will get if they choose your result over the others on the page. It does not change your ranking directly, but it has a big say in whether people actually click, which makes it well worth getting right.

> **In plain English:** the page title gets you noticed in the results. The meta description is what convinces someone to pick you.

## Why the meta description matters

Every result on a Google page is competing for the same clicks. A clear, specific meta description that speaks to what the searcher wants will pull more of them than a vague one, or than a random sentence Google grabbed from the page because you did not write one. More clicks to your result, at no extra cost, and stronger engagement signals over time.

> **Watch out:** if you leave the meta description blank, Google writes its own by pulling text from the page. It often reads awkwardly and rarely sells the click. Writing your own puts you back in control.

## How to write a good meta description

Keep it to around a hundred and sixty characters, because Google trims anything longer. Write it as a natural sentence that tells the reader what they will find, include the main thing the page is about, and give a reason to click. Every page needs its own, matched to that page, not one description repeated across the site. It is a core item on the [on-page SEO checklist](https://www.frively.com/blog/on-page-seo-checklist), sitting right alongside a clear, unique page title.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a meta description affect SEO ranking?

Not directly. Google does not rank you higher for a good description. It matters because it lifts your click-through rate, and getting more clicks than the results around you is a healthy signal that supports your position over time.

### How long should a meta description be?

Around a hundred and fifty to a hundred and sixty characters. Longer than that and Google cuts it off mid-sentence, so keep the key message near the start.

### What happens if I do not write one?

Google generates its own from the page content. It can work, but it often reads poorly and does not make the case for clicking, so writing your own is almost always better.

### Should every page have a different meta description?

Yes. Each page does a different job and answers a different search, so each needs its own description. Duplicated descriptions waste the chance to sell each page on its own terms.
