# Why isn't my business showing up on Google?

If you can find your business on Google by name but nowhere for the services you actually sell, the usual reason is simple: your website does not have a clear, dedicated page answering each of those searches. Google ranks pages, not businesses, and it can only show you for a search if you have a page that clearly answers it. Here are the common reasons this happens, and what fixes each one.

> **The core problem:** ranking number one for your own business name feels good, but the people who already know your name were never the ones you needed to win. The new customers are searching for the service, not the name.

## You do not have a page for what people search

People search for the job and the place, like "emergency plumber in Brighton", not your company name. If everything you do is bundled onto one services page, Google has nothing specific to rank. The fix is a page for each service, in each area you cover. That is the heart of [what makes a local business website rank](https://www.frively.com/blog/what-makes-a-local-business-website-rank), and it is why [the number of pages you need](https://www.frively.com/blog/how-many-pages-should-a-website-have) is bigger than a typical site is sold with.

## Your on-page basics are missing

Even with the right pages, Google needs to be able to read them. Missing page titles, no structured data, thin content and [slow loading](/services/website-speed-optimisation) all hold a page back. Working through an [on-page SEO checklist](https://www.frively.com/blog/on-page-seo-checklist) closes those gaps.

## Your Google Business Profile is weak

A lot of local searches show a map with three businesses before the normal results. If your Google Business Profile is incomplete or unverified, you miss that entirely. Here is [why your Google Business Profile is key to ranking locally](https://www.frively.com/blog/google-business-profile-local-ranking).

> **Watch out:** a brand-new site, or a page Google has not indexed yet, simply will not show for anything but your name at first. Ranking builds over weeks and months, so a quiet start is normal, not a fault.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does my business only show up when I search its name?

Because your name is unique to you, so Google has no competition to rank against. The searches that bring new customers are the service and location terms, and you only appear for those if you have pages built to answer them.

### How long does it take to show up on Google?

There is no fixed timeline. A new or newly fixed page can take weeks to months to climb, because trust and relevance build over time. The sooner the groundwork is in place, the sooner you give yourself the chance.

### Is it my website or my Google listing that is the problem?

Often both. Your Google Business Profile helps you appear in the local map results, and your website helps you appear in the normal results and answers the searcher once they click. They work together.

### Can I check where I currently rank?

Yes. A proper review will show you what you rank for, where you sit, and which searches you are missing entirely, which tells you where the work is.

## Ready to find out exactly why?

Guessing is slow. Our [free website assessment](https://www.frively.com/website-review) checks your site and shows you what you rank for, what you do not, and what is holding you back, reviewed by a real person rather than an automated tool.
