Confident business owner beside the question "How many pages should a website have?" and the one page, one keyword rule.

How many pages should a small business website have?

The honest answer is that there is no fixed number, and any website sold as a five-page or ten-page package was priced for convenience, not built for your business. The right number is your list of services multiplied by the areas you cover. For many local businesses that works out far higher than the package they were sold, and that gap is exactly why they stay invisible.

The formula: services times areas. A page for each thing you do, and a page for that thing in each place you do it. One page, one job.

Why the package number is the wrong number

A ten-page site sounds reasonable until you count the searches your customers actually make. Add up your individual services, not the categories, then the towns you serve, and you often land on dozens of distinct searches. Ten pages can answer about six of them: your name and your biggest services in your main town. Everything else is being answered by a competitor.

Why one page cannot do the job of ten

A page about a single service, in a single place, is unambiguous, so Google can confidently rank it. A page trying to cover six services is a jack of all trades and master of none, competing for everything and winning nothing. That is the whole idea behind what makes a local business website rank, and it is why cramming services together is why so many businesses do not show up on Google.

Rule of thumb: if a customer would ring up and ask for it by name, it deserves its own page. If you cover several towns, that service deserves a page in each one.

Does more pages mean more work?

More pages only works if every page is built to the same standard, which is why it should be handled by a system rather than by hand. Each page still needs to be right on the on-page SEO checklist: a clear title, real depth, structured data and internal links. Done properly, dozens of strong pages beat a handful of vague ones every time.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum number of pages a website should have?

Less about a minimum, more about coverage. At the very least you want a home page, an about page, a contact page, and a dedicated page for each core service. From there, area pages multiply your reach.

Can a website have too many pages?

Only if the pages are thin or duplicated. A page created for a real search, with genuine content, always helps. A page created just to pad the count, with nothing useful on it, does not.

What are area or location pages?

They are pages that cover one of your services in one of the towns you serve, so you can rank for searches that include a place name. They are the multiplier that takes a handful of services into dozens of useful pages.

How do I work out my own number?

List every service a customer would ask for by name, list every town you cover, and multiply. That is the number of searches worth having a page for, and a realistic target for your site.
