SEO for electricians: getting picked for the work you want

An electrician's diary can be full and the year can still be disappointing. Small jobs are easy to win and eat the day. Rewires, commercial testing, EV charger installations and landlord work are worth considerably more, and they are searched for in a completely different way.

That difference is the opportunity. The person who needs a socket moved is not researching. The landlord who needs an EICR before a tenancy starts is, and so is the homeowner pricing a rewire. Both will read before they ring, and both can be reached by pages that are simply not there on the average electrician's site.

The jobs you want are searched by name

EICR, consumer unit upgrade, fuse board replacement, EV charger installation, commercial electrical testing, landlord electrical safety certificate. These are specific phrases, typed by people who know what they need.

A site with a single Services page listing twelve items cannot compete for any of them. A page devoted to EICRs, explaining what the inspection covers, what the codes mean, how long it takes and what happens if something fails, can. That page also does half the selling before the phone rings, because the reader arrives already understanding what they are buying.

This is the one page per service argument, and on electrical work it pays better than on many trades because the job values are spread so widely.

Compliance is a selling point, not small print

Electrical buyers are unusually alert to credentials, particularly landlords and letting agents who carry a legal duty. Making your registration, your competence and your certification clear and visible does real work, and it is content search engines can read and people can act on.

There is a boundary worth respecting: state what you hold and who holds it, accurately, and do not imply approvals you do not have. We wrote about the rules around this in what business details a UK electrician must display.

Being found across your patch

Most electricians cover a wide area and rank in one town. The searches happening in the other towns are invisible to you, which makes it easy to assume they are not happening.

A page for each area you genuinely want work in fixes that, provided each page has something real to say about that area rather than the same paragraph with the name swapped. Local landing pages covers how to do it without producing thin copies.

The quick wins

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, with the right categories and photographs of actual work rather than stock images. Build one page for your highest value service. Put your registration where it can be seen without scrolling. Ask for reviews after the jobs you want more of, so the wording of your reviews starts matching the work you are chasing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most valuable page for an electrician?

Usually whichever high-value service you want more of and currently rank for least. For many that is EICRs and landlord certificates, because the searches are frequent, specific and repeat every few years.

Do I need a blog?

Not for its own sake. Articles earn their place when they answer a question a customer actually asks before buying, such as what happens during a rewire or how long a property is without power. Those bring in readers who are about to spend.

How do I get more commercial work?

With pages written for commercial buyers rather than homeowners, using their language: scheduled testing, compliance, minimal disruption, out of hours. Commercial searchers bounce off domestic-sounding sites quickly.

Is Checkatrade enough on its own?

Directories can bring work, but the enquiry is rented and often shared. Our view on that trade-off is in is Checkatrade worth it.
